Gestalt has historically acknowledged the distinction between “problems” to be solved and polarities where a “both/and” situation exists, and frames polarities as dilemmas to be managed. Understanding this problem/polarity distinction and applying tools to manage polarities are vital competencies needed by coaches, consultants, and other helping professionals. This introductory course serves as an alternative to the Foundations course fulfilling the prerequisite for participation in the Consulting Development Intensive.

This course is designed to develop internal and external resources skilled in teaching and helping others address critical organizational issues through Polarity Management. Unlike a typical train-the-trainer model which is often based on rigid content and design, the Consultant Development Intensive grounds participants in the principles of Polarity Management so they can be responsive in applying it to issues as they emerge in their organization. The degree to which the course is consultation focused or training focused is decided in collaboration with the client organization and/or the external consultants involved. This course allows participants time to do more experiential learning and recognize their own strengths and limitations as a consultant/trainer in Polarity Management.
